28 answersA place for development teams to talk: communities with text, voice and screen sharing channels, direct messages and friends, a calendar, and GitHub and Jira inside the channels. It works in the browser and in the desktop app.
Getting startedSign in with your Google account, create a community or accept an invite and open a channel. The tutorial shows up the first time and walks through each part of the screen; you can get back to it from the help (?) button at the top.
Getting startedNo. Communities, chat and voice work on their own. GitHub adds per-repository channels, pull requests and computed access.
Getting startedPeople aged 18 or older, with a Google account whose email is verified.
Getting startedDevColab runs in the phone's browser. Full adaptation for phones and tablets is in progress and arrives in the next versions.
Getting startedWhen you create a community, DevColab generates an invite link, and people with permission can generate others in Invite people. The same link works for several people and is valid for 24 hours.
Communities and chatEach role bundles permissions (manage channels, invite, moderate, connect to voice, speak, share) and can have a color. People with several roles get all their permissions, and a change applies right away to whoever is connected.
Communities and chatClick your photo on the card in the corner of the screen and pick Online, Away, Do not disturb or Invisible. With Online or Away, people in a call show as In a call; with Invisible you show as offline to everyone.
Communities and chatYour friends write directly. People who share a community with you send a request, which you accept, decline or block; in My account you can allow messages from anyone in those communities.
Communities and chatPeople with permission to manage the calendar create the event and choose the reminders. Participants get them in the bell, in computer notifications and, if the event asks, by email; each person can turn them off in My account.
Communities and chatThe community's roles decide: connecting, speaking, sharing and moderating are separate permissions, revoked instantly.
Voice and screen sharingNo. Voice and screen shares go through the media server only to reach the other people in the channel.
Voice and screen sharingYes. Click the person in the call and adjust their voice and screen share volume; the change only applies to you and stays in your browser or app.
Voice and screen sharingNo. Phone browsers don't offer screen capture; on a phone you watch other people's screen shares.
Voice and screen sharingIn the desktop app, check Include audio when you pick the screen or window: it works on Windows and on macOS 14.2 or later. In the browser, Chrome and Edge share a tab's sound and, on Windows and ChromeOS, the whole screen's.
Voice and screen sharingEach repository can become a channel with its pull requests, reviews and CI. With Requires repository access, only people with access on GitHub see the channel, and anyone who loses access leaves right away.
GitHub and JiraCommunity managers connect a Jira Cloud site and import projects as channels. Each person connects their own Atlassian account in My account and comments, changes status and assigns with it; branches and PRs with the issue key show up linked to the issue.
GitHub and JiraYes, for Windows, macOS and Linux. It does everything the browser does and also stays in the tray, alerts you with system notifications, has global shortcuts and the in-game overlay.
Desktop appThe installer isn't code-signed yet. On the blue Windows screen, click More info › Run anyway; this only happens during installation.
Desktop appThe first time, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to the DevColab notice.
Desktop appAppImage: make it executable and open it; it updates itself. deb: sudo apt install ./DevColab.deb. On GNOME, the tray needs the AppIndicator extension.
Desktop appOn Windows and the AppImage, the new version downloads by itself and applies when you restart the app. On macOS and deb, the app tells you and opens the downloads page.
Desktop appIn My account › Keyboard shortcuts, click the action and press the keys. Shortcuts work with any app in focus, including games, and stay on this computer only.
Desktop appTurn it on in My account › Overlay. It shows who is in the call and your notices on top of games in a window or borderless full screen. Shift F1 shows or hides it; Shift F2 opens the interactive mode, with the call and DevColab without leaving the game.
Desktop appIf you turn it on, people who see your status also see the app you are using, like a game or an editor. It starts off, is not stored and never shows with the Invisible status.
Desktop appMessages and communities are in the platform's database. Audio and video are not recorded, and volume, shortcut and activity preferences stay in your browser or on your computer.
Privacy and accountPeople who share a community with you, if you allow it. In My account › Privacy you can hide the email from your profile.
Privacy and accountMy account › Privacy has the download of your data; Delete my account is at the end of the section bar and asks what to do with your messages.
